“What is beyond the darkness? Some say chaos and a darker night. I say sunrise.”

—Talbot Mundy

I’ve started to spend more evenings looking up at the sky, feeling the embrace of the darkness, observing the cycles of the moon, and sensitizing myself to my changing moods in the process. I want to be more engaged with nature to ask questions and acknowledge the answers I receive but I feel myself wary of collapsing into more uncertainty. And maybe that is how it should be—an allowing and surrender—to what has always been. We shouldn’t know what is coming next. We would only mess it up as it seems unconscious human beings have done for millenia.

Even when we see clear signs of apparent peril: odd weather patterns, watching a documentary of where our plastics go and the people that pattern affects. Or becoming enraged at the plight of starving children half-way across the globe while ignorant of the hungry school children in our own communities. You’ve got to wonder why the suffering continues and to what avail.

This is a subject Franciscan Sister of Washington, D.C., Ilia Delio is well-versed in and lectures on regularly. In The Hours of the Universe she uses her religious and scientific background to aid us in understanding a deeper part of ourselves still not totally claimed:

The world of nature tells us that the flourishing of biological life rests on the openness of existence to new possibilities in the environment. Biological life does not work as a top-down control system but as a bottom-up/top-down interplay of informational flow, more like dancing a tango than building a house.

The best way to appreciate all that is happening around us it to change our way of thinking and organize our lives around that of Spirit. Even saying that, I sense a rise in my personal tension and resistance. Delio continues:

We are not called to maintain the existing order but to engage disorder as it lingers on the edge of new order. This means living with a certain level of anxiety, uncertainty, and darkness but also with faith, trust, hope, and surrender. We are called to live with a renewed energy of love, gathering the fragments of life into new wholes and testing the possibilities of life with a sense of spiritual adventure.

In my experience we begin with ourselves and becoming acutely aware of our frequency or how we are vibrating at any particular moment in our daily lives and in the variety of roles we play. The key to harmonious functioning in bringing about a different kind of world is establishing a different a kind of love that transcends the emotional ideas of what we are trying to make happen. It’s a love wrapped in a higher consciousness and raises us to another level. We have to be aware and totally engaged in our own moods, reactions, and responses to engage that higher consciousness.

I’ll be the first to admit that reaching—let alone maintaining—Christ-consciousness for an extended period is not easy. In certain situations and interactions with people I land in a place of vulnerability that would challenge even the most strong-willed. Sometimes a level of restraint of which I’m incapable of producing requires a moment of stillness, a silent prayer, or excusing myself and simply walking away until I can establish a state of personal equilibrium. All of that quick thinking and responsiveness to the present moment seems like a distance runner’s endurance test and what may be perceived as over-indulgent self-care. It is a resolution that works.

Such as it is, to calibrate at a higher frequency and not get pulled down into negativity, shame, blame or hopelessness requires practice and patience. I’m not saying that we never get angry or upset, but the more we can quell those storms of anxiety through awareness of all that is happening around us and noticing the anxiety as it starts, we change our frequency which changes everything. The attitude of courage facilitates some semblance of inner harmony and outer balance, maybe even synchronicity.

It’s not hard to learn how to do this and I will give a daily practice to set you moving in that direction. This practice is very simple and will generate potential benefits if consistently practiced.

You’ll need a timer and some quiet! In your quiet space set your timer for 10 minutes. The practice can be done sitting or standing, eyes closed. Whether sitting or standing make sure your weight is evenly distributed and your spine is long. In your imagination bring to mind an event in which you felt pure joy and delight; a time in which you felt total acceptance and value as a human being (this can be any time in your life). Make the experience as full as possible using all of your senses (sight, sound, taste, smell, bodily sensations). Notice where you feel your energy going—your heart or solar plexus—and focus on that area all the while breathing fully. Stay in this feeling space until your timer goes off and then go about your day. Don’t be surprised if you revel in this experience for a while afterwards. The more you engage in this practice you are building your resilience and frequency to a higher level. This practice not only affects you but everything around you.

Reflecting on a lifetime of exploring the energy field of consciousness David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D wrote this:

Everything in the universe radiates a specific frequency or minute energy field that remains in the field of consciousness permanently. Thus, every person or being that ever lived and anything about them, including any event, thought, deed, feeling, or attitude, is recorded forever and can be retrieved at any time in the present or the future.

That is one reason to experiment with the above practice to see what kind of results you can generate in raising your frequency. According to Hawkin’s Map of Consciousness, with practice you could be vibrating around 200 in the realm of courage and the emotions of affirmation, positivity, and balance on a fairly consistent basis. Eventually you will be functioning much higher at 1000 (maybe), but first the tiny steps must be taken without any pre-conceived idea of where you are headed. There it is again that state of uncertainty.

In the meantime, I hope this joyful Greig “Prelude” will inspire you to try something new or rekindle an old practice.
